i wonder if it's common practice for other blogs to randomly change their blog names once in a short while. because i did it first and then connie did it and we both do it now to a ridiculous degree. so i'll just go rename my blog now again.

i talked to my roommate on the phone today. his name is john r. cookson and he lives in reynoldsville, ohio, which is a suburb of columbus. he went to a private school with a graduating class of eighty, of which he was class president for three years. he plays bass, he likes music (radiohead, and he highly recommends the flaming lips) and he went to a bon jovi and goo goo dolls concert on tuesday when i tried first calling. except apparently one of the goo goo dolls was sick so it just became a three-hour bon jovi concert. he's not really into bon jovi. he's in the college and his major is undecided. he used to play football but was too small. i can't remember what else.

some cds i have to buy:
duncan sheik - daylight
radiohead - ok computer
ivy - guestroom
ivy - long distance
jimmy eat world - bleed american
jars of clay - furthermore
sixpence - divine discontent
natalie imbruglia - white lilies island
the ataris - so long astoria
the flaming lips - yoshimi battles the pink robots

and things by caedmon's call, shane barnard, david crowder band, maybe ten shekel shirt and mercyme. i had this whole list and now i can't remember it. oh well, it's on my computer at home. when i first heard chevelle's name mentioned on the radio, it seemed familiar to me and then i realized that they were a christian band.

something strange: my "adult alternative" internet radio station is playing some pop song with a gospel choir and i'm thinking "what is this!" because it definitely doesn't belong in the playlist, and i look and the info says that it's "there there" by radiohead, from their new hail to the thief album. i'm listening and thinking, "this doesn't sound like thom yorke. this person is singing a happy song."

edit: i looked it up. it's "hole in the world" by the eagles.

i haven't formally decided on my schedule yet. or informally decided on it, for that matter. you know when i was like.. i am choosing classes right now? yeah, i lied. i tried, i really did. the whole ordeal is very distressing. i don't technically decide until orientation, though. that should give me more time to procrastinate. ;)

so i spent a lot of time on my scrapbook today. it gets really frustrating when certain pages doesn't come out the way you had initially planned, but oh well. and i need to think of good .. words to put in. song lyrics, poems, what have you.. this is getting to be a pretty huge project. i think i was originally going to make it prom/postprom/graduation, but somehow, it has mutated into this enormous thing encompassing the entire summer's events. mm, i need to get more pages.

oh man. it's almost august. what the heck.

mm, "fnar" stands for "fine arts", and i think my compsci classes are in java.

of course it's better -- your classes start later! haha, it may not seem like much of a difference, but a class at 10 instead of 9 is a BIG change. a big change for the better!

yo derek, your classes actually look really fun! i wish i could take stuff like art. what programming language is cse? and what does fnar stand for?

okay, let's try it again. this is actually just for self-reference (but feel free to comment). i think this schedule is much better than the previous one.

monday: econ001(10-11), cse120(11-12), fnar123(1-4)
tuesday: sem(10:30-12), math114(1:30-3), cse130(4-5)
wednesday: econ001(10-11), cse120(11-12), fnar123(1-4)
thursday: sem(10:30-12), math114(1:30-3), cse130(4-5)
friday: math114rec(10-11), cse120(11-12), econ001rec(1-2)

so i put in my schedule requests yesterday. i have until next friday to continue doing early registration, after which they'll start the process of arranging things. these are the courses i've requested:

fnar123 drawing i
writing seminar "consuming thoughts" (about advertising language and consumers)
econ001 microeconomics
math114 calculus ii
cse120/130 programming language and technology w/ lab

the book says "classes end ten minutes before the scheduled end time. so, you can schedule classes back to back and have plenty of time to make it from one to the other." but i'm wary of that. i hope my schedule works out. here's how it looks weekly:

monday: econ001(9-10), cse120(11-12), fnar123(1-4)
tuesday: sem(10:30-12), math114(1:30-3), cse130(4-5)
wednesday: econ001(9-10), cse120(11-12), fnar123(1-4)
thursday: econ001rec(9-10), sem(10:30-12), math114(1:30-3), cse130(4-5)
friday: math114rec(9-10), cse120(11-12)

how does it seem? i need comments.

wow ellen, damien rice is amazing. everybody should be cool and listen to him. and i like the name adrien/adrian. i'm not sure which spelling i like better. actually, i think i like adrien. like adrien brody. i still need to see the pianist.

anyhow. derek, i'd like to know how you're going to prevent me from stalking you. seriously now. i'm going to find out everything about your life at penn. EVERYTHING. and you can't stop me.

i finally heard that mercy me song on z100. it was weird. especially when the song right after that had lyrics going along the lines of... let's get it on etc etc. i guess it's kind of cool. the other day, i heard this clip on 106.3 for 'new music' and they were promoting switchfoot. yeah, i got that same this-is-weird-but-cool-feeling.

we went bowling yesterday. and i have yet again established that i am an appallingly bad bowler. it's quite pathetic. i did, however, manage to achieve my all-time highest score (96) and a strike (woah) amid all the gutterballs and other very, very sad things. hahahaa... talk about your flukes. ;)

i think i might go running now.

no. why was it on z100?

sorry for being absent lately. there's really no reason for not being here except that i just haven't visited the blog. as if somehow i forgot about it. but don't worry, now i'm remembering.

i don't like fishing. bad experiences.

so what've i been doing this summer. i work at yorktel (along with eugene, grace, christine, and sometimes phil) doing graphic design for a touchpanel display. at the moment, i'm basically experimenting with different layouts, trying to find the most efficient and user-friendly way to have controls on a screen. and then maybe i'll start programming later. anyhow, i enjoy it. a few reasons: 1) air conditioning, 2) broadband connection, 3) computer speakers and music, 4) water cooler, 5) i'm getting paid to do something i like doing.

i think damien is a cool name. what's badly drawn boy's real name?

the missions trip was great. even though some people didn't think we were hardcore enough, i don't know ... i was happy with it. maybe i'm just lazy. and i especially enjoyed waking up to random pranks that involved toilet paper on my entire upper body or duct tape on my (hairy) legs.

steph, you will never visit us at penn. i will do everything in my power to ensure that you do not set foot inside the philadelphia city limits.

i wish i could cry.

okay i was considering writing a "frendz 4eva" entry but then i decided this is an inappropriate time because of the interesting mood i'm in at the moment. i'll do it when i feel poignant and eloquent and like a fobby asian girl.

I MISS ZI!!

did anyone else hear mercy me's "i can only imagine" on z100 today?

Monday, July 14, 2003
why does the format keep switching between this blocky format and the one where there's like no info on it. it's just a blank box to type in the middle of the screen?

or am i going crazy?

Saturday, July 12, 2003
cool...swarthmore. it sounds artsy. and i live like 40 minutes away from philly now, so you can come visit my house or vice versa! i miss you people. ok byee.

Friday, July 11, 2003
woooah, crazy new layout. how pretty. =)

anywho... we just got back from the missions trip tuesday. it was super fun. if anyone is interested, we're doing a slideshow at the random friday gathering at church (aka pseudo-fellowship) this week. meaning.. tomorrow.

i haven't written my testimony yet, so my thoughts about the trip are still a little jumbled. so instead of writing something significant, i'll just list random things that happened. like the boys playing tricks on derek in his sleep, late night talks in the girls' room, attending an amazing sunday service, and befriending some of the most outgoing, hilarious, adorable kids ever. ahh, good times. definitely good times.

i think i saw damien rice on mtv once. he seemed pretty cool. does the girl play the cello? i forget. and zi, i'm going to swarthmore. it's twenty minutes outside of philadelphia, so i can easily stalk derek and allison. convenient, no? i totally planned it that way. haha ;)

Thursday, July 10, 2003
i miss zi. where are you now?

my new favorite person, damien rice. cute irish singer songwriter boy + great string arrangements + occasional nice girl voice = super. listen to volcano.

what is everyone doing for the summer? lets go fishing on a boat. in the ocean.

haha yeah...the title should be "no person here." guffaw guffaw! =) oh yeah and "congrats" to graduates. steph, where are you going to school?

Sunday, July 06, 2003
i'm trying to figure out if derek changed the domain to his blog again and that's why there are no posts showing since last friday, or if really no one has posted since last friday. cuz of missions trip? or am i totally out of the loop.

anyway, to make me sound less odd...
hi! this was just a friendly greeting blog=)
